LOVE YOUR LIVER 1 The liver. It’s not something that most of us routinely think about. But it turns out that the liver is an essential player in the body’s ability to digest key nutrients and detoxify the myriad of chemicals that pass through it daily. Yet, more than 100,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with some form of chronic liver disease each year. Among those, 34,000 Americans die annually, making liver disease the country’s 12th leading cause of death. But that statistic is misleading if you’re an older adult. Among people between the ages of 45 and 64, mortality from liver disease actually ranks fourth, right behind heart disease, cancer, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Unfortunately, liver disease often comes tinged with scandal because many people think it only affects those who are alcoholics or those with hepatitis—a group of diseases that can be contracted via sexual intercourse or needle sharing with an infected person, or from food that has been handled by someone with the disease. But the truth is, most liver disease today is the consequence of something much more mundane—obesity and metabolic syndrome. But there is some good news. By making the smart choices found in the following pages, you can sidestep liver disease and optimize liver function to keep your entire body performing at its best.
