Dr. Matthew Budoff joins Dr. Susanne Bennett, host of the RadioMD Wellness for Life Podcast, to discuss inflammation and how garlic can help. Chronic inflammation is unfortunately on the rise, but according to researchers at the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS), supplementing with Kyolic® Aged Garlic Extract™ can effectively modify inflammation and improve several other health markers. The study appeared in the April 2018 issue of Clinical Nutrition ESPEN.
Did you know that obesity is linked to inflammation? Among the most dangerous complications of obesity is chronic low-grade inflammation. Numerous studies have linked this systemic inflammation to a plethora of obesity-related conditions like heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, depression, kidney disease, and certain types of cancer. If obesity-induced inflammation could be reduced, then it might also be possible to reduce the risk of these potentially devastating diseases. This theory lead the UF/IFAS research team to speculate that Kyolic Aged Garlic Extract (AGE), with its powerful anti-inflammatory properties, may be the answer to modifying obesity-related inflammation.
To test their theory, the researchers recruited 51 healthy, yet obese, adults to take part in a parallel, double-blind, placebo controlled randomized trial. The participants were divided into two groups—one taking 3.6g of AGE powder daily in divided doses and the other taking a placebo. At the end of the six-week study, IL-6 and TNF-α—two markers of inflammation—were significantly lower in those taking AGE compared to those in the placebo group. What’s more, the AGE group saw an improvement in their immune cell activity and lower LDL cholesterol levels.
We recommend trying Kyolic Formula 100 to start, which contains 600mg of Aged Garlic Extract, designed to support and strengthen your cardiovascular system by reducing the major risk factors and promoting overall heart health.
